Walking. Walking to the subway on my way to work. Walking to the grocery store to gather my ingredients for dinner. Walking to dinner out with friends and walking quickly to the corner store to grab a cup of hot chocolate. These are the things I miss. It is weird to live in this place where walking isn't your primary mode of transport.
I miss walking into center city. Having to navigate your way around the sidewalk. When you have to pick up your pace because the tourists are walking that turtle pace and I just cant stand to stay behind them. Then all of a sudden you have a dog taking a crap and you have to shimmy over to the right to avoid stepping on a fresh turd on the sidewalk. You continue along your walk headphones in and as of recently I would most likely be listening to some podcast.
I miss walking around the city and accidentally bumping into a friend, I don't think this can really happen as much here. You sit in a car and drive a huge piece of metal around completely oblivious to who is in the cars next to you, behind you going in the opposite direction of you. There is never a slight head nod between two people who walk past each other on the sidewalk here - because there is no one on the sidewalk.
There is no walking over a pothole thing that is spewing a nasty fog onto the sidewalk and holding your breath for as long as feasibly possible. There is no pretending to be on the phone with a very important call and walking double the speed while you avoid the 2 people who are trying to get you to sign a petition for who knows what. There is no digging into your pocket as you pass the same homeless man that you have passed everyday on your way to work for a year outside of dunkin donuts for the few quarters you have to spare.
Here you can roll up your window, blast your music, put your AC on and completely dive into a world where there is nothing outside of your car.
Philly I miss you. I miss all your weird smells, nasty weather and most of all I miss walking everywhere.
oh and of course I miss all of my friends.

I feel your pain! When I drive up from San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, a walking village, after about 10 days, I'm ready to head back south because of all the time one must spend in a car......that, and air conditioning. A secret.........I go to the grocery store and talk to the men who work in the produce department because even in the grocery line, no one talks to you! Different for me.....
